You or your spouse file for divorce in Oakland County and right off the bat you get a notice that there is a court date already?! Many people are surprised and/or intimated seeing a hearing date so quickly which is understandable. In Oakland County, Early Intervention Conference hearings are automatically scheduled for matters with minor children for parties to meet the Friend of the Court staff (including Referee) assigned to your case approximately 60 days from filing. These are typically routine 10 minute hearings and, for many people who resolve their cases amicably, this is the only time you will “appear” in Court aside from your final hearing. If you have any questions on this or any other family law matter, please contact us.
Obviously, you should look to hire a lawyer that is experienced and competent, preferably one who exclusively practices family law. But, what else should you look for? I tell people to look for someone who feels like a personality fit; someone you feel comfortable talking to about private, serious and sensitive subjects and topics. I also believe you should look for a lawyer who is communicative and responsive – while being on call 24/7 isn’t realistic, you want a lawyer who gets back to you and communicates with you in a timely and professional manner. Lastly, you want someone you feel will give you good, sound advice. If you would like to discuss these attributes of my practice or any other family law matters, please contact us.

We advise every Emmer Law PLC divorce client during the divorce, and, in writing in the final Judgment of Divorce, to seek advice and counsel from a tax professional or accountant. Emmer Law PLC and Attorney Max S. Emmer do not provide expert tax advice, and, always instruct clients to seek that out as there are significant changes to your tax returns, filings, statuses and credits upon divorce (especially with shared minor children).
